Picture Book
The picture book that touched my life was Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. I absolutely loved this book. As a child I remember the late nights before I would go to bed, me and my three older sisters would huddle in one of our beds and read this book. We were obsessed with the illustrations of the girls. They were so detailed and beautiful. At the time, I never realized that this story was an African twist to the Cinderella story. I especially liked this version of Cinderella because it was different and it's a great way to give kids a new look on culture. It also has different twists to the story that isn't seen in the original Cinderella but that doesn't mean that the kids would be too far off if they tried to foreshadow the story and figure out eventually what will happen next.
This African tale evokes the Cinderella story in its portrayal of two sisters, spiteful Manyara and considerate Nyasha, and the young king who is searching for a bride. Steptoe has illustrated this modern fable with stunning paintings that glow with beauty, warmth, and internal vision of the land and people of his ancestors. This is really a book that I will never forget.
